Those who have watched the interview by Ms Amy Goodman and Mr Juan Gonzalez (conducted for Democracy Now! and consisting of two parts) will realise that the question as to whether Iran executes juveniles under 18, was badly posed. Mr Gonzalez asked:

"Let me ask you in particular about the question of the execution of juveniles. My understanding is that Iran is one of only five or six nations in the world that still execute juveniles convicted of capital offences and that you—by far, you execute the most. ..."

to which Mr Ahmadinejad answered:

"Firstly, nobody is executed under the age of eighteen in Iran. This is the first point. And then, ..."

One can strongly argue that Mr Ahmadinejad gave the correct answer to the question posed to him ("one can strongly argue", because I cannot claim to be fully aware of all the details; it is possible that Mr Ahmadinejad indeed gave the correct answer to the question posed).

The question that had to be asked, and was not asked, is:

"Let me ask you in particular about the question of the execution of juveniles, that is (or, specifically) execution of those who have committed capital offences at ages below 18. My understanding is that Iran [..] …"

If this question had been asked, Mr Ahmadinejad's could not have given the answer that he gave (quoted above). Those who know Ms Goodman and Mr Gonzalez will have no doubt that the error made by Mr Gonzalez in formulating his question cannot have been due to lack of experience on the part of the two. In my opinion, the fundamental error made in asking the wrong question from Mr Ahmadinejad should be attributed to those who must have briefed Ms Goodman and Mr Gonzalez in preparation for this interview. Mr Gonzalez, being insufficiently deeply briefed for this interview, not only asked the wrong (or insufficiently sharp) question, but was not able to articulate his question on receiving the above-quoted answer from Mr Ahamadinejad. We are thus left with the (very probably) technically correct answer that Mr Ahmadinejad gave to the question posed. One should realise that politicians never volunteer to give comprehensive answers to questions asked from them; they have to be squeezed skilfully if one wants them to provide comprehensive answers to one’s questions. Viewed from this perspective, no person should be surprised that Mr Ahamadinejad did not volunteer to tell that some of these executed in Iran are executed for capital offences committed at an age under 18.
