Iran opposition leaders meet

MirHosein Mousavi & Mehdi Karroubi

Mirhosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the two disputing candidates of the June presidential elections in Iran met today to discuss the current situation of the country and together emphasized the need for truthful media coverage of current events and issues.

Tagheer website reported that the two opposition leaders met at Mr. Karroubi’s office and Mr. Mousavi claimed the “promises” made by the Iranian representatives in Geneva is “destroying” the hard work of thousands of the country’s scientists.

Former prime minister of Iran maintained that in case the government fails to honour the “promises,” the stage will be set for “widespread” sanctions against the Islamic Republic. He added that the current situation of Iran’s nuclear dossier is “the result of adventuresome policies and a denial of the national principles and interests of Iran in foreign policy.”

Mr. Mousavi claimed “those who accuse the children of the Revolution and the servants of the country of foreign ties to the East and the West, they themselves are constantly bowing to America in obedience.”

The establishment has accused the opposition leaders and the recent protests of playing into the hands of foreign conspirators that are trying to topple the Islamic Republic, a charge that the two reformists have repeatedly denied.

Mehdi Karroubi also accused the executive branch of the government and their "lack of planning" for the explosion of “poverty, corruption, prostitution and embezzlement” in Iranian society. Karroubi also condemned "corruption amongst city officials."

The two opposition leaders condemned government’s confrontation of election protesters and their resistance to releasing political prisoners which Mousavi described as a “national demand that could improve the situation.”

Mehdi Karroubi and MirHosein Mousavi deny the legitimacy of the tenth government because they claim the elections were rigged to secure Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory. They both have vowed to pursue their complaints against this government through legal channels.
