Protest against Iranian delegation trip to Sweden

Swedish political parties and Iranian organizations protested against the planned visit of an Iranian parliamentary delegation to Sweden.

According to reports gathered by Radio Zamaneh, this Thursday, six members of Iranian parliament’s Education and Research Commission will arrive in Sweden for a two day visit with a number of Swedish MPs.

The Swedish Social Democrat Party has criticized this visit and called on the MPs meeting with the Iranian delegation to question Iran over “violation of human rights.”

The Green and People’s Liberal Party have announced that their members will not meet with the Iranian delegation.

Seven Iranian organizations abroad have also addressed a joint letter to the Swedish foreign ministry stressing that “the member of the Iranian parliament are not representatives of the people of Iran because they have been in effect appointed through undemocratic and fabricated elections.”

The letter also maintains that “it is evident to all that the Iranian regime oppresses its people and violation of human rights has become an everyday part of people’s lives. The world has repeatedly witnessed violation of human rights and oppression of people in Iran after the presidential elections of 2009 in Iran.”

The letter also accuses the Swedish Foreign Minister of “overlooking the systematic violation of human rights in Iran.”

The letter is signed by seven Iranian organizations who urge the Swedish government to assume a clear and well-planned policy to confront “Iran’s human rights violations.”
