Karzai nominates seven cabinet positions

President Hamid Karzai has nominated seven cabinet ministers to fill the posts in his government, the Afghan Parliament reported.

About six months ago, Karzai nominated 24 minister but only 14 of them were approved by the Parliament. In the past months, the Afghan President has been repeatedly rebuked for failing to fill the eleven remaining posts in the cabinet.

The recent nominations include appointments to the ministry of Interior, higher education, commerce and industry, border and tribal affairs, transportation and aviation.

Mohammad Yoness Qanooni, head of the Afghan Parliament welcomed the nominations and added that the credentials of the nominees will be reviewed on Monday and following the speeches of the nominees on their plans for their ministerial duties, their appointment will be put to a vote.

Last month, Afghan Minister of Interior and National Directorate of Security turned in their resignation stating inability to provide security for the peace jirga (talks), and the their resignation was approved by Karzai.

The president’s office has announced that they will soon announce the five nominees for the remaining ministries as well as the National Directorate of Security.
