Mehdi Karroubi sends message of resistance
Mehdi Karroubi at Tehran's media and press exhibition
Opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi who was attacked on Friday by a group of government supporters at a press and media exhibition, posted a video message on Tagheer website for his supporters claiming they are trying to “isolate and confine him to his house.”
The physical assault against Mr. Karroubi which caused his turban to fall, was counterattacked by is supporters and reformists attending the exhibition.
According to Mr. Karroubi, the exit to the exhibition was designed in way that people could not follow him and there, he was subjected to “greater assaults.”
Mr. Karroubi claimed that he was attacked in a similar way in earlier outings and maintained that they are trying to "isolate us and confine us to the house.”
The opposition leader claimed that in 1990 he had spoken out against the “deviations” of the Assembly of Experts and the confrontations with the third parliament. He adds that his criticisms in 1990 resulted in the summoning of a group of clerics by the special court for the clergy, but he did not give in then, either.
The disputing candidate of June presidential elections that were allegedly rigged to secure Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory announced that he “will not leave the scene” and will “stand fast without fear on this path.”
In the past two months, in addition to disputing the outcome of the elections, Mehdi Karroubi has publicized alleged reports of detainee torture and assault in prisons and therefore he has become a target of more frequent attacks by pro-Ahmadinejad forces and conservative political figures.
